New Features - Versioning, Get link plus more info [ Edited ]

Hey everyone!

In the future, we’ll be sharing previews of features to be released here in the community , but right now I wanted to share a little information about some great new features made available to you in our most recent release that can be located in the Actions dropdown on the in Folders tab on our site. I think a lot of users are going find these new features to be extremely useful, especially the new additions which are Get Link and Versions options. Read about all of these new features below, and please let us know what you think!

Actions in Folders

 

The Folders Tab from our website is your space to store, share, and collaborate. When you create a folder it can be used to backup all of your most precious family photos and videos, store private records, or collaborate with a business partner on an important presentation. We offer a lot of options for managing your storage.  When you roll over any file or folder from the website you will see an Actions drop down (pictured above) that contains many actions you can take on the file.

Get Link

• This is a quick and easy way to get a download link for one of your stored files. The great thing about this option is that you can drop the link into an Instant Message, or even post it to Social Media accounts like Twitter or Facebook. When the other person clicks it they are taken to a download page.

Versions

• With versions you can pull up a list of all the previous version of the file that have been uploaded/synced and choose to download a previous copy. This way if a change is made that was unintended, the old copy can be retrieved.  As you are using the Desktop Sync app (downloaded from here:  http://www.yousendit.com/applications ) every time you open a file, edit it and save it will create a new version of the file.  If you ever need to reference a past saved version of your file just head to the versions drop down list.  Here you will see a list of all past versions that you can download.

Send

• If you’re just wanting to do a typical YouSendIt Delivery you can choose Send and you’ll be taken to the Send page with the file already loaded and ready to go out.

Download

• If you’re on a computer that doesn’t have a copy of the file and you need it – go ahead and download it to have a copy in place and ready for use.

Move

• The Folders Section is your space, and you can manage the locations for all of your private folders. Use the Move option to change where a folder or a file is located in the Folders section.

Rename

• Part of organizing your space is making sure you can easily find everything. Use Rename to change a file or folder name anytime.

Delete

• When you no longer need a file and don’t want it cluttering up your folders, use Delete to get rid of it. Once done the change will rollout to any shared folders, to your Mobile App, and on Desktop Sync. Once deleted the file can not be retrieved.

Versions is pretty cool.  I see dozens of copies of an XLS that I've been using for a while.  I guess you've been saving these all along!  This will come in handy!!!

Wow the new versions feature is awesome!  I store all of my flyers, brochures, other marketing material in my yousendit cloud along with my client notes and some business spreadsheets.  It's great to be able to just open it up in my desktop sync app and then save it while keeping a running history of my past versions!  How cool, thanks guys for the update.

Versions is definitely a handy new addition, its great to have the original copies of unedited files in the event i want to touch back on them and re edit

Personally, I would prefer the default to be that files are DELETED after the 14 days are up.  This seems to be a more secure way of storing files that are sent to or that I send to others.  

Also, I am quite unhappy with the new emails I'm getting indicating that a client has sent a file to my dropbox.  I need a link to that file so I can send it to one of my employees so they can access the file and work on it.  If I have to open up Yousendit to find that link now, this is an extra step and a huge time-waster.

Some things don't really need improving.

Versioning is nice, but REALLY need a fix for the installation drive issue; just can't use the desktop app if it's only on C:

THERE IS NO WAY TO DELETE THEM WITHOUT ASKING THE YOUSENDIT HELPDESK.

The text editor of the web site isn't near as good as the text editor of the Express version.

When sending instructons to clients, it's easier with Express, but the web is preferred.

I'm still not clear about something. I'd like to sign up for online storage, but I need to know this first.

With some services, when a photo is deleted from my computer, it would subsequently fail to be stored online. (After a given interval, it would be eliminated by the host of the service, I imagine through an automated program.) I still maintain the photo on an external hard drive. I am looking for a service that would not be monitoring my computer and only retaining the photos that are still there. When I upload a file for storage, I need it to remain there until and unless I access the storage to delete it there. To me, that is true storage, as opposed to mere syncing. I am looking for a way to have an additional, long-term backup, which will supplement my external drives or be an alternative in case of a failure of my drive(s).

How exactly does your service work? I would appreciate an answer in time to take advantage of your current promotional pricing.

The desktop app does let you have "selective sync" which means you can choose which Folders you want to be on your computer, and which you only want only on the cloud.

If you're just looking for plain old offline backup, there are probably other solutions that would work better.   YouSendIt is more about getting work done than storing old stuff.

hi, I appreaciate the versioning of the file accessible from the web interface.

Do you have a plan to introduce it also on the desktop version of the application? It will be very useful for customers like me that work on a daily base with the desktop app from their pc to retrieve on the fly older version of the files without having to access the web client.
