Previewing Files from the Website

[ Edited ]

- Hi everyone! You requested it, and we listened - announcing the release of our new Preview feature, which will greatly enhance your document-viewing experience!

Preview

With this new feature, users can now preview many documents in their Folders section directly from the web app! By highlighting a file, or by clicking the Actions menu, you will see a Preview button:

Clicking Preview, or clicking the name of a supported document [all supported document types are listed below] will render a preview of the document, allowing the user to zoom in/out, and to click through the pages of a multiple-page document, without having to download the file. Consider the convenience of being able to flip through a 20-page PowerPoint presentation without even having to download it:

This feature has been in demand by creative professionals, and we’re all excited to finally make it available to our users!

This feature is currently available for files that with a maximum size of 15mb, a maximum page-length of 75 pages, and supports the following file types:

DOC & DOCX
PDF
PNG
JPG
PPT
TXT
RTF

Please note:  Currently, the preview button will still show for all files types, even ones not in the supported list.  If you click Preview for an unsupported file type, you will get a message that reads Preview is not supported for this file type.

- Personally, I think it’s a fantastic feature, but I’m interested in knowing what you think. Feel free to post your thoughts on the Preview feature in this thread. Thanks!

Re: Feature Friday: Preview

As a professional photographer I shoot all raw files 24 Megs and larger. CR2 format from my canon. Will I ever get to preview these in the future?

Re: Feature Friday: Preview

We are adding more file types that preview will support in the future, however since RAW files are native to each camera manufacturer and there are multiple types these are lower on our list of priorities compared to more standard formats like PSD.

What does everyone else think about preview, I would love to hear your comments or suggestions!

I send video files to clients and colleagues. When will you offer preview of video files? I mostly use quicktime h.264 files. My Dropbox, which I don't pay for (at the moment) can preview these files easily. I may consider ending my "paid" support of You Send It next my fees are due if you don't have the video preview added in to your feature set by then.

Do you plan to offer an option to preview all files within a folder, versus having to choose one at a time?

Preview Doesn't Work

Did you notice that it doesn't work for PDFs? When you say that PDF is supported did you actually try it out? I tested a couple of PDFs - one was a 400kB rgb 4pp document with fast web view enable and all fonts embedded. Preview failed. So I thought I'd try it one a 1 page PDF scan of a plain document... wait for it.... Preview Failed. Firefox failed. IE failed. It didnt prompt for any browser plugins etc. so shall we just assume that it doesn't work for now?

Re: Preview Doesn't Work

Hi Tribe, I'm sorry you were having issues with our Preview feature. I tried to replicate your issue, and was able to successfully preview an 800kb PDF, as well as a 5mb PDF in both FireFox and IE. There may have been a connection issue when you were attempting to preview PDFs, but it appears the feature is currently working fine.

If you continue to have issues with the Preview function, please feel free to contact our support team, and they will be happy to help troubleshoot what might be causing the the problem.

Re: Feature Friday: Preview

I'd love to see support for PSD's and Tiff's.  Is there any way of creating small thumbnails that are always visible within the file menu?  Clicking on each file and waiting for a preview to display takes quite a bit of time to locate a file.

Re: Feature Friday: Preview Now Available from the Website!

Why hasn't watching a video without downloading become possible. After waiting over 3 days for the video to finally upload onto the system, now I find out my client's will have to wait almost 5 hours...if not longer as your estimations have proven inaccurate before...to watch it...this is so much slower than simply snail mailing copies back and forth. I really don't see the advantage of an online system that is this inefficient.

Which site do you use for video previews? We just waited almost 3 days to upload a 1.26 GB video to YouSendIt only to find out our clients will have to wait 5+ hours to download. It would have been faster to snail mail.

We're working on an all new preview capability. It's probably several months away, but it will be outstanding!

Re: Feature Friday: Preview Now Available from the Website!

Hi

Well I signed up to a Pro-plus account so that I could keep audio files here and share them with my colleagues. So now I find that the Preview doesn't support audio files! It's crazy, totally eliminating the purpose of having the storage. To share with someone they can only download each  file which is no different to sending it to them! When are you going to support audio. And oh yes, how come I can play the audio from my desktop Yousendit folder no problem?

Re: Feature Friday: Preview Now Available from the Website!

Hi Don,

You can play them on your computer (in the desktop app) because, well, they're on your computer.  Your computer knows how to play these files.

You're right about the preview.  There's a lot of stuff not supported but as I understand it, there's a bunch of work going on here that should make this a whole lot better in the not so distant future.

I'll also point out that I think you're missing the point of Folders.  Folders are a real time view into the Folder on your computer.  If you make a change, anyone that you share that Folder with can see that change.  You can also give them access to make changes if appropriate.  This is much more powerful then just "sending" files.

Re: Feature Friday: Preview Now Available from the Website!

PPT files are also PPTX (extension of the latest PowerPoint versions), so WHY is this format not supported and WHEN might it be? Is anyone aware of another online program that does preview (preferably WITH animations & transitions)? Thank!

Re: Preview Now Available from the Website!

It states that PPTX (newer PowerPoint extention) is available but it is NOT working. The file is under the file size limit too... Any info on why?

Re: Preview Now Available from the Website!

I just tested out a PPTX file and it did render in the preview fine.  What is the exact size of the file?
