Recent cloud storage related announcements from major industry players such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon have created a sense of momentum and dialog about cloud based services, particularly as to whether smaller, more innovative companies can survive under this heightened competitive landscape. Last week’s CIO Forum put on by Forrester brought together more than 500 CIOs and enterprise architects looking to understand the opportunity to evolve with workers growing expectations, and to overcome common challenges.

While there were a lot of interesting forums and discussions, three things stood out.

Google Drive has finally arrived; adding a new big player in the cloud storage space. Online storage is no longer a foreign universe, Google announcing Google Drive has validated this space.

You can now access your data anywhere faster; and collaborating outside your office is no longer a security issue. Apple has added some new features that are going to arm professionals with a PC-level experience, incent developers to create more powerful apps, increase the BYOD movement, and encourage enterprises to accelerate their mobile security policies.

It’s hard to believe that another Gartner Portals Content & Collaboration Summit has gone by. It is always the place to be for those of us in the collaboration biz to connect and reflect on the big issues facing organizations today.

Collaboration is just a different way of saying working in teams or work groups. Everyone, no matter your industry, need to be able to easily and efficiently collaborate with others on various projects. Like for YouSendIt, we recently had to collaborate cross-departmentally on the launch of our new enterprise solution, Workstream by YouSendIt. In our case we ate our own dog food and use YouSendIt as our content collaboration solution.

We recently conducted a survey with GigaOM Pro to understand which business content collaboration tools professionals are choosing to use; also, what are the current challenges around collaboration and file sharing. 63% of respondents reported that they are using collaboration tools that their IT department did not sanction. Does this ring true for you at your organization? There is no longer one specific tool people use to communicate and collaborate because the lines of personal and professional devices have blurred.

With stats like “In 2010, 1.9 billion people sent 107 trillion emails” and “60% of adults in 2011 use email and search engines daily”, it is no wonder that the pace of business is changing. The “volatile economic environment, increased competition, and rapid change of customer preferences” are some of the top factors that have affected this change.

Like many others across the world, I will be tuning in to Apple’s event tomorrow. The imminent release of the iPhone 5 and iCloud is great news for the industry, sparking a significant spike in the adoption of cloud services. Instead of tens of millions of people using online content storage, millions or billions of people will be doing so. As a result, more and more people will become comfortable with storing and accessing content from the cloud.
