Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

I've been using Express for a couple of years. I just installed the new desktop app when the file I wanted to upload exceeded the 50MB express limit on my free account. The new app works fine -- but the folder it created lives at the top level of my computer. I work in a networked environment, and would prefer that this folder "live" with all of my other user data files on my network drive. But I can't seem to move the folder. The best I could do was set up a couple of shortcuts -- one on my desktop and another in "My Documents" (which is networked), both pointing to the unmovable folder.

Only our network files are backed up every day -- not files stored locally. Isn't there a way to specify where the app's folder can live?  (For what it's worth, my Dropbox folder can "live" on my network.)

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Hey Tartak,

Currently any files in our Folders (cloud) section cannot be moved... It is a new product and we are working on improvements so in the future we are trying to make this feature available to you.  Stay Tuned!

Thanks,

Shelly

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Is there any movement on adding this feature (moving the YouSendIt folder anywhere you want)? I upgraded to the Pro so I'd have unlimited online storage, but that's useless if I'm limited to the free space on the my system drive. The files (photos) that I want stored online are all on a much larger drive.

Thanks

Same issue here. It would be more than nice if I could relocate the folder where my files are stored on my mac. Otherwise I'll run out of storage space on my computer quite fast.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

It's a very big gap of the program that I can't move the main folder to another HD. Most of the pro users are using the primary HD as a system disc and we usually have the work files on a secondary big HD (mirrored in my case). So, this PRO account isn't quite a PRO yet...  :smileywink:

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Same problem here. This is a major drawback of this app. I've been asking the costumer support for this for at least 4 months and nothing has been done about it! I'm not a programer, but how difficult can it be to enable this option!!? Other cloud systems have it! People use this app mainly to synchronize from work to home and vice versa. But work environments have network restrictions and this app becomes completely obsolete. Please update the app to solve this issue!!! Otherwise, I (and many others) will be forced to switch service...

Hi Tartak,

The Desktop App is directly connected and synced to your cloud Folders, and currently, this section cannot be moved. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and I can assure you that we are working hard to make more versatile options available to you in the future.

If you have any other questions or feedback, please let us know!

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Just another tick for the ability to move the desktop folder, this time from a security point of view.

It doesn't matter how secure your cloud data is; the reality is that you're far more likely to get your laptop stolen with your potentially precious data on it. So I'd want to put my YouSendIt folder with my other cloud storage ... which is on a separate encrypted partition.

As it stands data that's on a laptop without full drive encryption is vulnerable. I can't afford that performance overhead on my netbook.

I was just about to go from Lite to ProPlus until I investigated the desktop app and this was enough to stop me from upgrading. Pity - most of the stuff is quite cool.

Another vote for the abilitiy to relocate the local YouSendIt folder. Like many others, I do not use my default Users folder for the bulk of files. I use SugarSync and Dropbox which both allow me to choose where to locate the local files - something I need.

Would be very willing to upgrade to a proplus account and pay 149USD annually if I could move the local yousedit folder to another harddrive than c:

Without this feature, I will probably cancel even my pro-Account.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Hi,

I am facing the very same problem.

Systemdrive is a small but fast SSD drive 32GB

Storage drive is 3TB Raid1

I would like to synchronise files and folders between my Desktop and Laptop

The laptop has 256GB SSD

But on the Desktop I would need to relocate the YSI sync folder from system drive to D-drive.

So.... PLEASE come up with a proper solution fast.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

The fact that the YouSendit at is hardwired to the C drive is a massive drawback. From my point of view I'm using a 120 GB SSD drive for my system drive. I have 20 GB free. I bought the Pro Plus account because of I wanted an easy way of saving large unlimited amounts of data to the cloud as a way of backing up my data. The amounts I'm talking about exceeds by far the amount of free space on my SSD drive. Because of this is YouSendit desktop app is rendered useless for this task. So the only way to do it is by uploading via the browser. But this is a problem because you can't upload a folder via the browser. You need to upload file by file which is totally impractical, inconvenient and time-consuming. So in this respect having unlimited online storage is a moot point.

The other disadvantage I have discovered is because YouSendit online storage is a closed system, you can't use a third-party application like Goodsync Pro (which is an application which really does sync files and folders in both directions BTW ) to upload your files. The reason being because the location of the YouSendit server is hidden from view to even from subscribers . I feel  YouSendit as a company need to make it crystal clear about the limitations of this cloud syncing system to new users .I would say these are fairly major drawbacks and need to be addressed before disillusioned users look for solutions elsewhere.

I like the concept of YouSendit and the original idea works and still works very well. But since you have been branching out into sharing folders and online storage I feel that the transition hasn't lived up to expectations as yet. If I was managing this company I would call a meeting immediately, look at the competition, look at  the user feedback and review the current strategy. Of course you may be doing that already and I hope you are but the last thing you want to do is to sleepwalk into oblivion due to lack of foresight and proactive decision making.

Version 2.0 just came out and this issue has been once again ignored!!!!!! This is the major drawback of this service (poited by the hole community) and you still do nothing about it!! It is now almost 1 year that I was told by your phone support team that it was on your priority development list... very disapointment! I wont renew my subscription and change to the competition!

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

I just was asking about this. I bought a pro plus subscription and was shocked to know there's no way to move the YouSendIt folder. Seems like it should be easy! It does not even seem to be accessible via the registry, which is very concerning.

Many users need this feature. I would sing the praises of YouSendIt and recommend to all of my friends and clients if this feature were available.

Please add this feature to YouSendIt ASAP or I may cancel my account.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Please fix this. I don't understand why we can't move a folder to another location. But I don't need to understand it, I need it fixed. This is costing yousendit money because I'm sure other companies want to buy into this but solution, but this is a deal breaker.

Same deal, Windows installed on small SSD C: dirve, all apps/data on big D: drive, YSI desktop app will only install on C:, only sync files on C:, unworkable solution; not sure what answer is, may have to switch to another application.

By the way, it looks like users have been complaining about this feature for almost a year w/o resultion; what's the deal?

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

So it's quite obvious by now that YSI just don't care about this huge drawback.

Numerous updates to the app and a total lack of any updates from YSI themselves on this issue.

Why would I stay with this product, when Dropbox and Google Drive can get it right?

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Agian I would like to stress out the need for the Folder to be relocated to another drive than the system drive.

Many computers nowadays hava a SSD for the system drive and a standard HD for the storage of files.

Alos in my case,

Laptop has a SSD drive with limited capacity and HDD with 500GB
I am a paying customer.....

My Office Desktop is the same

64GB system drive on SSD

3x 3TB HDD for file storage.

Please come up with a solution (can't be that difficult that in 4 months there is still no solution. This means that it just does not have any priority where it actually should have TOP priority)

Hi, Nadim,

Could you tell me more about why you want to change the location of your YouSendIt directory, and what kind of drive you would like to store it on? For example, is it an external drive?

Thanks,

Re: Folder Location Sync Select

This is one of the most common issues at the moment. Just take a look at this YouSendIt forum page to see what we mean.

I also need to store the YouSendIt folder on an external hard drive. The reason is that my C drive is smaller. Having the YouSendIt folder there simply fills it up. I have several external drives with much greater capacity. In order to use YouSendIt desktop app I have to put the storage folder on one of these.

This is the same for both my home and work computers.

Until this is possible I'm afraid I must uninstall YouSendIt; and eventually cancel my subscription as this is the primary reason for which I pay for your service.

Thanks for your prompt attention and assistance.

Re: Folder Location Sync Select

If you look on the boards you'll see frequent requests for this feature, as well as a great deal of frustration over YSI's failure to address this in a timely fashion; Like many others, absence of this feature makes the product almost worthless to me and, like many others, will lead me to cancel my subscription if it isn't forthcoming soon. Like many others, I have my operating system (Win 7) installed on a small (75 GB) solid state drive, and all applications and data on a larger (2 TB) drive. All the docs I need to sync are on the data drive, NOT the system drive, there's no room on the system drive; If I can't point YSI at the drive where my docs actually reside, it's no use to me; Please fix ASAP; David Rowell Attorney, Fresno California

Hi,

Did this ever get adressed? I cant see any way to chose a folder on my E: drive for example as the "home" directory for sync. This is a real issue for me becuase like so many my C: drive does nopt have enough space on at least one computer I want to sync. If it is not going to be addressed then please let me know so I can chose another service.

Many thanks.

Re: Folder Location Sync Select

This is also a "must have" for us.  We have a commercial photography business and upload large files to YSI.  Our boot drive is completely filled so the Desktop App has become useless.  I am not sure why YSI is not addressing this issue with the numerous complaints I see posted on the web.  Sync should be able to access additional internal and external drives.

It has been over a year since Shelly_YSI promised the feature was coming. There have been updates without this issue being resolved. I only discovered the problem today, but see other users have been complaining for over a year without a fix.

Uploading files without the App is too bulky a process.

The App is killing my C: drive space.

I will have to look at other services.

A suggestion...

Hi!

I am new to this service, but I think moving the files or folder you do not want to be synchronized in C: to a folder you choose online which also is not synchronized, then you have files stored online. When you want to download them again just move them online to a folder that is being synchronized ...

Do not know if it will help, but will surpass the impossibility of synchronizing unilaterally by choosing folders in c: without having to drop them in duplicate in the sync folder in c:

Thanks!

Ana

Re: A suggestion...

Thanks for your input Ana.  The problem is that the files, when synced, will always we stored in the YouSendit folder on the boot drive, thereby eatinging up boot drive space, if there even is any available.

YouSendIt Folder location outside of root drive

There needs to be an option from someone out there to be able to put your cloud folder in any location you want.  Why is it that no one privdes this yet?  The moment this becomes available, you will see more people coming to your service.  Many people have data on External drives that they want to sync, but don't want all that data filling their hard drive.

What the heck this has been a top complaint on here since the desktop program was released I don't belive for a second there's not a quick fix... this looks like an attempt to keep your costs down and lmit the usable space for pro users. False advertising to say unlimited storage if you choose to limit it this way.

We will also have to cancel our subscription because of this issue.

I'm having a difficult time understanding why duplicates of the files need to created at all.  There are other services that simply sync to the location of the files where they reside without this kind of overhead.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Wow - this is a material deficiency to most - and they should be clear about this limitation.  I just upgraded to the "unlimited" storage after being a paying customer for approx 2 years.  Have a small SSD in my laptop with OS (C drive), large SSD for data storage (D drive).  This program is not "unlimited storage" - it's "unlimited TO THE EXTENT YOU HAVE ANY HEADROOM ON YOUR C DRIVE, AND IF YOU STORE YOUR FILES ANYWHERE ELSE, TOO BAD FOR YOU!!!"

Examining this message board, they've been on notice of the issue for over a YEAR.  DropBox and the other services have no problem with such an issue.

I'm going to try to call to unwind my year contract/upgrade to "Pro" (that is, if I can get through;  last call to them - 45mins on hold waiting for person).  Many customers need flexibility re the folder location - I'm amazed that they are trying to get away with this.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

I don't understand this. There are dozens of requests for this functionality going back to December of 2011!!!

In my review of the postings, I noted this posting from 2012.08.13 by YouSendIt_Kyle:

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Hi everyone! This feature will be made available in a future version of the Desktop App. Unfortunately, I don't have any estimated timeframe as to when this will be available.

Is YSI Product Management asleep at the switch? I know that there many clients who have said they are going to downgrade or change providers because YSI is missing this functionality.

One of the advantages of YSI is unlimited storage. However, unless we have an unlimited size C: drive, unlimited storage doesn't help us!

FYI, I have found a UK based vendor, LiveDrive, that offers a similar service for about the same price as YSI with a 5 TB cap.

Unless someone from YSI Product Management comes on here very soon with a date when this functionality will be available in the YSI Desktop App, I'll be taking a close look at how flexible the LiveDrive sync app is!

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

I finally realized I had a C:\Users\myname\YSI\1\Temp file with 178gb in it -- that is why my 500gb pc had NO space left.  I had to download tree size file scanner to find these files.  I am afraid to delete all the tmp files in this folder.  Has anyone done this?  I want to confirm it will not effect anything else.  There is also another thread - with just as many frustrated users.

Destination/sync folder other than C: drive!

I also wondered if going in and compressing or archiving in the YSI properties would make a difference? I am happy to be rid of You Send It -- just tell me how to get my 178gb back without messing up anything else.  Anybody??

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

Unbelievable. I have read through all 47 comments dated more than a year ago. A year ago I called on this subject. For one year YSI has been saying, "Don't worry - we're working on it. It's a priority."  They just told me that on the phone again - and then said go back to the forum and add a comment just so the product guys would know how important this is.

I have worked in software development. If this is a priority, then enabling the ability to re-map the location of the local YSI folders is fairly straight up and shouldn't take more than a year to do!!!

PLEASE FIX THIS.  I am on the verge of dropping my account.

Re: Can I move the YouSendIt desktop app folder?

You all probably already know this but I received this tip and wanted to pass it on just in case it could help - the people who I receive and send large files to said they do not have the software downloaded - they access via the browser so I guess they do not keep copies.  (Which is how many of you use it I guess)

Once I got rid of the software and the hidden files containing 178gb of YSI - my pc is all good and I will follow their advice on how to use YSI.
